This action-packed tale focuses on a 1944 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who was one of only fifty Jewish midshipmen commissioned in his class during World War II. In the Pacific his destroyer survived both a typhoon and a Japanese kamikaze aircraft attack. While a midshipman, Shulman had been introduced by his parents to Jewish leader David Ben-Gurion. After the war, as a civilian, Shulman helped Israel's "clandestine" sealift of Jewish refugees from Europe to Palestine. Ben-Gurion called Shulman to Israel to help train officers for Israel's naval service and then lead Israeli warships into combat. For his service Ben-Gurion named Shulman Israel's first admiral. He was just twenty six. J. Wandres' book fully documents Shulman's role in helping to launch the new nation. Based on interviews and correspondence with those who knew and worked with Shulman, and on declassified secret U.S. State Department documents, Wandres provides a unique window into Israel's relations with the U.S.
