Anotace knihy

Neurology has tended to shy away from evidence-based medicine (EBM), and this has been especially true in the area of neuroimmunological disease. However, increasingly EBM in neurology is being used to analyze neuroimmunological diagnostic assays and therapeutic interventions. This growing interest in this area of neurology has been driven, in part, by the explosive growth in immunology, which has experienced a meteoric rise over the last two decades. As we learn more about immunology, immunological therapies are increasingly being applied to neurological diseases not previously thought to have an immunological basis, such as stroke, Alzheimer s disease, epilepsy, Parkinson s disease, and primary brain tumors. All have increasingly been envisioned as having important neuroimmunological components. §A Primer of Neuroimmunological Disease is a significant new resource for neurologists concerned about these conditions and this burgeoning area of clinical care. A practical and balanced guide to the diagnosis and treatment of neuroimmunological disease, this volume will be of great interest to neurologists and both basic and clinical immunologists and rheumatologists who seek an enhanced understanding of neuroimmunological processes. Employing a standard approach when describing a disease (that is, definition, etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis including both standard and molecular pathology clinical manifestations, natural history, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis), readers will find this volume to be the first thoroughly comprehensive, rigorously evidence-based overview of the field. A Primer of Neuroimmunological distinguishes itself by providing a range of features not generally included in texts on neuroimmunology. These include a broad and comprehensive introduction to neuroscientific aspects of neuroimmunology for the immunologist and to immunological aspects of neuroimmunology to the neurologist/neuroscientist; an evidence-based system that uses a clearly defined grading methodology; broad presentation of information in the form of figures and tables; strong cohesion among topics by focusing on the prototypic neuroimmunological diseases, which serve as the foundation from which to explore and explain other neuroimmunological diseases; a single author perspective, allowing the avoidance of repetition that can sometimes occur in mult-authored texts; and a focus on the overlap between neuroimmunological and neuroinfectious diseases, such as the continuing controversy about whether MS is an infectious or autoimmune disease, the similarities between neurosarcoidosis and neurotuberculosis, and the autoimmune aspects of Lyme neuroborreliosis. §Neurologists, immunologists, infectious disease specialists, neuroscientists and researchers in these fields will find A Primer of Neuroimmunological to be a state-of-the-art title that is indispensable for the many neuroimmunological and neuro-infectious diseases they need to understand. Because neurologists especially need to be more aware of conditions in the third world, as travel increases and the globe shrinks, the section on infections will be of particular interest to them, especially the topic of CNS tuberculosis. Finally, medical students rotating through clinical neurology and basic neuroscience will find this primer thoroughly understandable and useful for their general needs as well.
