Compaction of soil is essential in the constructionof highways, airports, buildings and bridges.Typically compaction is controlled by measuring thedry density and the water content of the compactedsoil. There is a trend towards measuring thesoil modulus instead or in addition to density. Thereasons are that the density measurements are madeusing nuclear density meter, an undesirable tool intoday's political environment and that pavementdesign uses moduli as an input parameter. Althoughthere are many apparatus available to measure soilmodulus in the field such as Falling WeightDeflectometer and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer, a lightweight device which can measure the soil modulusfast and accurately is in great need.This book presents the newly patented BriaudCompaction Device (BCD) which is a portable devicemeasuring soil modulus in several seconds. Theprinciple of the BCD is explained and the validationprocess of BCD is demonstrated in this book. Thisbook should help shed some light on the the field ofcompaction control technologies and should be usefulto professionals in the construction andmanufacturing industry.
