This book is an overview of the historical development and geography of cities. Special attention is devoted to the role of cities as centers of work and production and as dense concentrations of residential activity. The greater part of the text is devoted to issues of urban development under conditions of globalization. The book also deals with the emergence of urban problems and predicaments and the political dilemmas that they pose. Empirical reference is made to cities in all five continents.
