White Walls proposes a biological addition to the history of modern power. It asks whether the material culture of European elites - white lead paint, cosmetics, tableware, glazes, crystal, medicines, renovation dust, and nurseries filled with polished pale surfaces - quietly altered the very minds that governed the early modern world.
The book does not claim that lead explains history by itself. War, religion, inheritance, climate, institutions, economics, and chance remain in place. Lead enters as a missing variable: slow, cumulative, socially stratified, and hardest on children. Because lead damages the developing brain, especially the prefrontal systems involved in self-control, planning, inhibition, and assessment of consequences, chronic exposure may have shifted the behavioural profile of elite families across generations without producing an obvious medical catastrophe.
Beginning with the contrast between Scandinavian red ochre and elite white interiors, the book follows lead through biology, architecture, court culture, political theory, historical case studies, and the many "elephants in the room" that conventional explanations tend to leave untouched. It separates established toxicological facts from historical reconstruction and authorial conjecture, treating the lead hypothesis not as a closed answer but as a testable frame.
At its centre is a simple question: what if some decisions usually explained by ideology, character, decadence, or institutional failure were also shaped by a domestic toxin embedded in status itself?
