How do Americans store firearms in their home? Do they keeptheir firearms unloaded and locked away as is often recommended?The current research examines the nature of gun storage in Americanhomes. Little research has looked at this important policy andpublic health issue and little is known about gun storage ingeneral. Public concern about firearms and accidental injuries anddeaths compel an examination of firearm storage and handling. Gunstorage may result from the purpose for which guns are owned orused. Rational choice theory allows the expansion of this idea ofutility by explaining how individuals may rely on their culturaland situational experiences to make decisions about firearmsstorage. This dissertation adds to the current knowledge aboutfirearms by examining how cultural experiences and situationalcontexts associated with gun ownership might increase thelikelihood that owners keep firearms loaded and accessible in theirhomes.
