Anotace knihy

You wake up, and for two seconds nothing has happened.

Then it arrives, all of it at once, and the drop is worse than yesterday was.

Nobody warns you about those two seconds. Nobody warns you about the drive home with the collar still in your hand, or the first door opened onto the silence, or the bowl still sitting there with breakfast in it, or the walk hour arriving anyway at half past six as though the day had not been told.

This is a book about that. Only that.

Sixty-six moments from the first days after your dog dies, written in the order they tend to arrive - from the car park to the first time you laugh and hate yourself for it.

WHAT EACH MOMENT GETS

- Two pages. Never three. Nothing continues, nothing is cross-referenced, nothing asks you to hold a thread.

- The moment itself, in detail - the towel still folded on the back seat, the ring on the floor under the water bowl, the worn handle on the lead.

- What is happening, in plain words, and why it is ordinary.

- ONE small, concrete thing you can do about it now. Not "honour your grief." Sit in the car for two minutes before you go in. Turn off the photo memories, not the photos. Keep a little of the hair, so the rest is just hair.

NOTHING TO SCAN. NOTHING TO DOWNLOAD.

No code, no link, no app, no companion of any kind, nothing to install or register for and nothing waiting for you outside these covers. If you have no signal, no charge, or no wish to look at a screen this month, the book works exactly the same. Everything it has is printed on the page in front of you.

WHAT IS NOT IN HERE

- No stages of grief. Nobody can tell you which one you are in.

- No timetable, and no promise about how you will feel or when.

- No statistics, no studies, no numbers of any kind.

- No claims about where they are now - in either direction. What you believe is yours, and this book leaves it exactly where it found it.

- No veterinary or medical advice, and no verdict on any decision you made. The questions that belong to your vet are named as such, with a page on how to ask them.

- And not one line, anywhere, suggesting that grief for an animal is a smaller kind of grief.

WHO IT IS FOR

Anyone in the first days or the first weeks. Anyone who is functioning at work and then has to stand in a stairwell. Anyone who has been told they can always get another one. Anyone who cannot read more than a page at a time right now - which is most people, because grief is exhausting and focus is fractured, and this book was built for exactly that.

A NOTE ON THE AUTHOR

Cora Selby is not a veterinarian, not a doctor, not a psychologist and not a bereavement counsellor, and does not claim to be. There are no credentials behind this book and no research in it. What it has instead is a narrow subject, a fixed shape, and a refusal to promise anything it cannot deliver.
