In this book the authors examine Turkey's attempts at modernization, from the Ottomans in the 19th century to the Kemalist Republic and developments since 1945. They look at the challenge to Kemalism posed by Islamism and Kurdish nationalism. The book also explores the difficulties and possibilities faced by turkey in its hinterland - its Arab and Persina neighbours, Central Asia and Israel. Its attempted revival of Pan Turkism, the formation of a Turkish-Israeli axis, its willingness to engage in military operations in Northern Iraq and the threat of force against Syria in October 1988 all illustrate that, in the post-Soviet world, Turkey is willing to become a much more active regional player. However, this book argues, how it plays will be decided by the outcome of the profound and ideological and political conflicts within the country.
