Robert Altman writes and directs this American crime drama based on the novel by Edward Anderson. In 1930s Mississippi, convicted murderer Bowie (Keith Carradine) is serving his sentence on a prison farm when he manages to escape with two accomplices. They go on the run, embarking on a series of violent bank robberies, but it is not long before the police are on their trail. With Bowie's past catching up to him and, having fallen for Keechie (Shelley Duvall), the daughter of a garage owner, Bowie must decide whether to start a new life free of crime or continue down a destructive path with only one way out. The cast also includes John Schuck, Bert Remsen and Louise Fletcher.
