This book studies the politics of third country association in EU security and defence. In particular, it examines the third country issue in light of Brexit, comparing the security and defence aspects of the UK's withdrawal from the EU with the experience that Norway has had as a third country partner in this area. It argues that the Brexit process heightened the importance of third country participation in the EU's security and defence and explains why the seemingly obvious need for cooperation and shared strategic interests alone does not lead to frictionless cooperation or integration between the EU and like-minded third countries. Adding a theoretical and conceptual depth to what is still largely an empirical topic, this book draws important conclusions about the possibilities and limits for European security and defence cooperation in challenging times.
