Increasingly it is argued that HIV/AIDS might threaten theinternal and external security of severely affected societies dueto its devastating impact on social, political, and economicvariables. Although various studies have explored this issue, thequestion whether and how far HIV/AIDS may affect politicalstability, lead to state failure, or even to the outbreak ofconflict requires empirical examination in the coming years as theepidemic unfolds and the necessary AIDS-death data becomeavailable. However, what can be empirically analyzed at this pointis the reverse-causal effect or the question whether conflictexperience impacts on HIV-prevalence rates. This book introduceddecisive mechanisms linking the often complex and indirectrelationship between conflict experience and HIV/AIDS. The finaltheoretical model draws on a social epidemiological approachenlarged by a micro-foundation as well as a conflict dimension. Inaddition, main results of a corresponding quantitative analysisbased on a nearly complete sample of 197 countries are presentedbefore some policy conclusions are drawn.
