In 'The Form and Function of Analyticity,' I§investigate the different use of the concept of§analyticity arising from different interpretations of§the implications of general relativity. Don Howard's§has argued that Einstein's break with members of the§Vienna Circle is due to the latter's retention of a§formal distinction between analytic and synthetic§propositions and Einstein?s insistence on a holist§conception of scientific language. The assumed§premise of that argument is that the§analytic-synthetic distinction must necessarily§entail atomism. Thomas Oberdan argues against the§soundness of Howard's premise by offering Carnap's§project as a counter-example. I explore how Oberdan's§claim could be understood; i.e. how Carnap's project§could be consistent with some sort of holism. I also§suggest that by re-interpreting the notion of§analyticity; by prioritizing the function of analytic§judgments over their logical form, the§analytic-synthetic distinction can be compatible with§holism.
