Anotace knihy

While all archaeological research is now seen as having broader social, cultural and political dimensions, many archaeologists, anthropologists and related professionals earn their living in the cultural heritage sector. The field of cultural heritage, seen by many as an industry , brings the ethical and social dimensions of research practices into central focus. There are a growing number of monographs and collections that draw on the ethical issues and problems of the heritage industry. The majority of past considerations in the field have focused on conservation ethics, cultural property and repatriation, Indigenous control of cultural heritage and the impact of looting, treasure hunting and violent conflict on cultural heritage. While the number of critical and theoretically sophisticated treatments in this area is increasing, there has been no thoroughgoing exploration of the ethical problematics central to practice across the heritage sector including museums, management, tourism and the media as key sites for the day to day work of heritage professionals. This book focuses on empowering strategies and foregrounds the real world implications of ethical standpoints; it also reveals the deep historical and philosophical underpinnings of ethical positions in the heritage industry, forecasting their future trajectories and making constructive suggestions for positive intervention. In order to achieve these outcomes the book highlights insights developed by writers with real world experience in dealing with ethical dilemmas in their daily practice. It adds to this an innovative approach to the emerging ethical challenges of our time; such as climate change and the growing inequalities implicit in the multiple processes of the risk society and cultural and economic globalization.
