From the Arab uprisings to the 'indignados' protests and the global Occupy sit-ins, the debate on new protest movements gains momentum in the media and scholarly agendas. But what is new about these occupations of public space? How does the mediation of physical space impact upon these public protests? What does this mean for the future of participatory democracy? This book provides a corrective to the notion of a 'disappearance of public space', showing that physical space is being claimed by citizens in order to perform their political ideology. It examines the ways in which various media are used to circulate the everyday, lived democratic ideals of these groups, broadcasting the local physical space to the world. Looking at a range of occupations of streets and squares staged in different world sites, the contributions illuminate how square and street politics and its mediation become vehicles for new ideas of citizenship, public life and democracy from local to global levels.
