"Inkle and Yarico" is the story of Inkle, an English trader, who sells his lover Yarico as soon as they leave Yarico''s mother country and he is no longer in need of her help. The story focuses on the difficulties of ethnic encounters and, furthermore, it openly deals with the enslavement of native peoples who are considered to be inferior by the English. Hence, the story of Inkle and Yarico had a considerable impact on the public''s view of slavery. Until today, several versions of this tragic story have been published which vary in their approach to the topics of ethnic relations and slavery. Before three completeley different versions will be critically examined, a thorough theoretical introduction to various concepts that are correlated with slavery and ethnic relations will be given. Furthermore, a very long chapter is dedicated to the possibilities of teaching the topics of ethnic relations and slavery at school.
