Anotace knihy
Much of what the general public perceives about sexual offending comes from sensationalized yet isolated accounts of gruesome crimes in news reports or from fictionalized plots on television or from other media. The present work combines our own experience and studies in assessing and treating over 10,000 offenders in the course of 40 years with the scientific literature in this field to bring to the non-specialist and the general public, the nature and extent of actual sexual abuse in the United States, the tools we use to assess risk and treat the offender, the current state of ideas about the genesis of sexual offending, and the methods which have proven most effective in preventing its occurrence. It attacks the myth that all offenders are inherently evil and cannot be treated, and demonstrates, with actual case examples, the means by which we can alter many offenders' thinking and behavior such that they no longer pose a threat to the communities in which they live.
