Prison is a harsh enough place, but being a foreigner ("farang") in a strange land, and this ordeal becomes a lot more horrifying. "Rotting in the Bangkok Hilton" chronicles T. M. Hoy's descent into the madness, horror, and insanity provoked by South-East Asian prison life. You see from his eyes the bizarre events of daily life in Thai maximum security prisons. Witness from the inside of Chiang Mai Remand and Bang Kwang Prison; the murders, drug overdoses, torture, and cruelty that Hoy witnesses. While attempting to "adjust" to this third-world hellhole, he ends up contracting tuberculosis, and almost loses his life. Hoy's detail places you in his shoes, as you feel the chains around your ankles and the stomach aches from lack of food. You quickly realize that, being given a life sentence, this is how he will be spending the rest of his days. And if he's lucky, he'll die before he really begins to suffer. Hoy's stories are painful and his words are heart-wrenching, and you see first-hand the fear of everyday life that he must live with. Go places you only see in your nightmares; to a world in which few survive, and none emerge unscathed.
