From the moment Rosalba Carriera (Venice, 1675) presented a miniature on ivory as her admission piece to the Academy of San Luca in Rome in 1705, she was considered the inventor of this genre. But her most famous works are in fact her pastels, influenced by French portraiture of the period which she had studied particularly during her trip to Paris in 1720-1721. Here she visited the great collections and worked for the aristocracy in a crescendo of professional success that would lead her to the greatest heights of fame. For example, in 1730, she was called to Vienna to paint the portraits of the imperial family, and became a much sought-after artist by the most refined courts in eighteenth-century Europe. Even critics regarded her work highly, especially Roberto Longhi, who considered her worthy of figuring alongside the great artists of French painting.
