Anotace knihy

She rides from the Otherworld on a horse no one can catch. She chooses her own husband, defying her father's will. Falsely accused of murdering her newborn son, she endures years of degrading punishment-yet emerges vindicated, her truth finally recognized. Rhiannon, whose name may mean "Great Queen," embodies sovereignty, resilience, and the dangerous power of women who refuse to submit.

From her origins in medieval Welsh manuscripts to her presence in contemporary spirituality, popular culture, and Welsh national identity, Rhiannon has been endlessly reimagined: as Celtic horse goddess, as symbol of unjust suffering, as feminist icon, as living deity worshipped by modern pagans. Victorian scholars recovered her from obscurity. Twentieth-century feminists recognized her resistance to patriarchal violence. Stevie Nicks made her name famous to millions. Today she appears in fantasy novels, pagan rituals, and debates about Welsh cultural heritage. Each generation has found in her story what it needed-and each has claimed her anew.

This comprehensive study examines why Rhiannon endures. It reveals how her medieval story of sovereignty and false accusation speaks to contemporary struggles for justice and female autonomy, how her Otherworld origins inspire spiritual seekers, and how her presence in Welsh literature shapes cultural identity. For scholars and general readers alike, Rhiannon offers a compelling case study in how mythology lives, changes, and retains its power across centuries.
