Two of the three most important dates in the modernhistory of thewind band are easily identified. The first wasBernard Sarrette s1789 formation of the Garde Républicaine Band inParis, anorganization Richard Franko Goldman refers to as a group of 45players incontestably the first modern wind band, interms of size,of function, and of repertoire. The second wasthe creation of theEastman Wind Ensemble by Frederick Fennell in 1952.The formermarks the creation of the first modern wind band, thelatter thecreation of another wind instrument organizationwhich combinesthe appropriate features of the symphony orchestra,military bandand concert band with regard to performance,composition andmusic education. Although prior to the formationof the EastmanWind Ensemble there had been a marked increase in thenumber oforiginal pieces written for wind band, the latterhalf of the 1950squalifies as the next milestone in wind band historydue to asignificant increase in the amount of original musicwritten for thewind band.
