Anotace knihy

The depletion of energy resources and raw materials has a huge impact on the building market and in the development of new synthetic building materials, whereby the reuse of various (waste) residue streams becomes a necessity. Based on the outcome of COST Action TU 1301, scientists, regulators and representatives from industry have come together presenting new findings and data sharing knowledge, experiences and technologies, to stimulate research on the reuse of residues containing enhanced concentrates of natural radionuclides (NORM) in tailor-made building materials, whilst considering the impact on both external gamma exposure of building materials to occupants and indoor air quality requirements. The reuse of NORM residues can also decrease an environmental detriment related to its accumulation at landfills. Chapters address legislative issues, measurement and assessment of building materials, physical and chemical aspects, from raw materials to residues with enhanced concentrations of natural radionuclides (NORM), processes and building products containing NORM as well as end of life and reuse requirements. By improving radiological impact assessment models for the reuse of NORM residues in building materials, the authors hope to further stimulate justified uses of NORM residues in different types of newly developed building materials. Waste to materials research is a challenging topic, which needs to involve experts on all (chemical, physical, ecological, economical and radiological) aspects of materials. Presents a holistic approach in developing new reuse pathways involving experts on different (technical, chemical, physical, ecological, economical and radiological) aspects of materialsProvides practical guidance for industry to address questions and comments regarding the EU-BSS standards linked to the processing of NORM in building materialsBy using radiological impact models, the book investigates realistic legislative scenarios, so that the authorities concerned can allow reuse pathway for NORM in accordance with sustainable constructionThe book is primarily aimed at industry and actors linked to the industry but also researchersContains a strong international network of expert authors and internal reviewers for each chapter
