The author has attempted to describe the scientific work in simple Ianguage, but, owing to the very advanced and abstruse nature of much of Kelvins work, he ia conscious that some of it will remain obscure the non-scientific reader. We will be happy however, if anything he has written induces the reader to make a further study of the subject in Kelvins original memoirs, which are now accessible to all in his published works.
