L'idée est de reprendre ce que Jésus a partagé et de montrer en quoi cela est encore important aujourd'hui, c'est-à-dire comment cela peut nous aider à grandir en tant que personnes. Pour ce faire, l'auteur a rassemblé des enseignements provenant de diverses sources. Les récits bien connus de Matthieu, Marc, Luc et Jean sont présents et servent de base aux principes fondamentaux. Il a également eu recours à d'autres écrits, tels que l'Évangile de Thomas et l'Évangile de Philippe, ainsi qu'à d'autres textes trouvés dans la bibliothèque de Nag Hammadi.
