Anotace knihy
In the 1570s and 1580s the Low Countries were torn apart. Cities were sacked, universities emptied, and rival confessions and rival princes each claimed the right to rule the rest. Out of that ruin Justus Lipsius (1547-1606), among the most celebrated scholars of his age, fashioned a discipline: in De Constantia (1584) a Stoic consolation for the private man amid public calamity, and in the Politica (1589) a doctrine of prudent, ordered government for the prince.
The book follows Lipsius from Louvain to Jena, Leiden and back again, among printers, patrons and enemies, to show how a philologist's reading of Seneca and Tacitus became one of the most influential answers to the crisis of order in early modern Europe.
