Nothing is wrong. Nothing is urgent. And still, by Tuesday evening, you are tired in a way that has nothing to do with what you have done. It is the things you haven't done.

The message read three weeks ago and never answered. The form. The appointment nobody but you knows about. The call you have been meaning to make for two years. The shelf that has been in a drawer so long the drawer has organised itself around it. None of it is heavy. All of it is present.

It Can Wait follows one ordinary week, from a Monday evening to the Sunday night that closes it. Twenty-four short pieces about the quiet weight of the undone, and about setting it down without pretending it isn't there.

Monday, a list on a kitchen table that did not get touched all day. Tuesday, somebody arrives carrying weather that was never yours. Wednesday, ninety minutes spent improving something that was finished at half past nine. Thursday, eleven seconds from a meeting, replaying at the sink. Friday, a reply two words long, and the version of you somebody else is holding. Saturday, rain, and twenty minutes that undo two years. Sunday, five o'clock, and the whole week arriving at once.

This is not a book about getting more done. There are a great many of those, and this would be a poor addition to the shelf.

Nor is it a book about caring less. The things on your list matter. The person you have not called matters. It is about the space between the thing and the doing of it, and whether you have to spend that space at war. Because most of what the undone costs you is not paid at the moment you finally do it. It is paid in the hours beforehand in the quiet running tally, in the small weight carried into rooms that have nothing to do with it. That is the part that can be set down.

WHO THIS IS FOR
Someone who is a little behind, and has been for a while. Someone who cannot quite put the day down at the end of it. Someone carrying a list where two items have been rewritten so many times they have stopped being tasks. Someone who is not looking for a system, and has tried several.

HOW TO READ IT
Each piece is short - a few minutes at most. There is nothing to finish and no benefit in reading faster. This one is a week, and it moves like one, so it reads best from the front. But you can open it anywhere, on any evening, and put it down again. Nothing here is written to instruct you.

It Can Wait is the second of three books, each one a quiet place to put something down. The first, Nothing To Fix, is for the evenings when nothing has gone wrong and you are worn out anyway. The list will still be there in the morning. The morning will still have hours in it.
