Scientific and technical leaps forward in recent years have introduced a new dimension into the study of objects from the ancient world. In 2000 a discussion meeting was held at the Royal Society in London with the aim of debating the potential of this 'image enhancement' among archaeologists, historians and scientists. These fifteen papers form the proceedings and demonstrate the variety of uses to which computers can be put to reconstruct and recreate three dimensionally ancient objects. The items come from across the ancient world and include: wooden stylus tablets from Roman Britain; cuneiform tablets; runic inscriptions; virtual reality and architecture and sculpture; Rome's Theatrum Lapideum; a model of Sagalassos; numismatics; terra sigillata; ancient faces; Egyptian mummies. Supported by numerous diagrams and photographs, these are technical and specialised papers that also serve to introduce new methodologies to experts involved in other areas of study.
