The purpose of this book is to show programmers how to build real-world HTML and HTML5 apps---both web-based and mobile--in combination with JavaScript, jQuery, and CSS/CSS3. The book consists of a series of hands-on lessons that teach progressively more advanced skills; each lesson is supported by a video-based lesson in which the author demonstrates how to execute each lesson in the book.The book will begin with a set of lessons on the fundamentals of both HTML and HTML5, including material on all the essential tags and attributes. Section 2 shows how a static HTML5 web-application can be turned into a dynamic web-application with JavaScript and jQuery. Section 3 teaches the multimedia capabilities of HTML5. This will include the audio and video elements and the canvas element. This section will also contain lessons on CSS3, and look at how that builds on the existing capabilities of CSS.The fourth section of the book will focus on the HTML5 APIs. These also rely on an understanding of JavaScript, and therefore build on the lessons in section two. This section will teach the reader how to store data offline, use background processes and files, and use a number of other important APIs.By the end of the fourth section the reader will have a good understanding of how to build web-applications for desktops and laptops. The fifth section of the book will teach the reader how they can adapt these web-applications to mobile phones and tablets. This includes understanding the power of CSS3 media selectors, and learning how HTML5 web-applications can be packaged as native applications for mobile phones.This book will consist of exercises and screencasts that walk the reader through the process of building web-applications, and provide them the opportunity to experiment and extend the examples to create working web-applications that perform useful functions. Each lesson will be accompanied by a screencast that will walk through the step-by-step instructions. The screencast will also contain additional background discussion, and will provide assistance for programmers who prefer to learn visually.By the end of the book the reader will be able to independently develop interesting HTML5 based web and mobile applications, and will have a solid understanding of all the fundamental technologies discussed.
