Excerpt from History of the British Corn-Laws The improvements in agriculture within the present cen tury have greatly increased the supply Of food, but the experience of many years has shown that our population is now, to a great extent, dependent upon the corn-growers of other countries; and that, when the crops in Great Britain are below an average, and even when they are not abundant, the rise of prices creates severe distress among large masses Of the population, unless the supply of corn and grain is ih creased by importation. This distress could not be avoided, if all the waste lands Of England capable of improvement were taken into cultivation. In an Old country, where all the best, and even the moderately fertile soils have long been cultivated, the resort to those of inferior powers of produc tion, so far from alleviating the distress of the population.
