"Marnie Mueller's Green Fires, set in Ecuador in 1969, dramatizes the first clashes between indigenous peoples and multinational oil companies, a conflict now playing itself out in final battles which may well ultimately determine the fate of the rainforest. Annie Saunders, a disillusioned Kennedy-era Peace Corps volunteer, returns to Ecuador, trying to come to terms with her traumatic experiences there. What she finds instead is a menacing and mysterious trail which she determinedly follows -- ever deeper into the jungle -- uncovering a sinister secret of international dimensions.
