'Overpainted Photographs' is the sixth Gerhard Richter title by Heni Publishing, offering a comprehensive account of a largely unknown aspect of the practice of this widely celebrated artist. The catalogue documents Richter's series of overpainted photographs, which he began making in the late 1980s and still engages with today. These works feature juxtaposing landscapes from across the globe, captured in photographs taken on the artist's travels. Richter has then adapted these photographs by painting over the initial image, sometimes completely concealing it under layers of paint. An essay by Hans Ulrich Obrist - curator, critic and International Director of The Serpentine, London - introduces the works and details the processes the artist adopts in their production. This is followed by an essay by acclaimed American art critic Robert Storr, who explores the mediums of painting and photography, and their intersection, further. The book is comprised of four volumes - the latter of which is an index to the works in the catalogue - contained within an elegant slipcase.
