Anotace knihy

This edited volume is an outcome of the first major collaborative project between Japanese economists and political scientists, funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The volume applies game-theoretic analysis to solving puzzles in international relations of Japan and Asia that are inexplicable by other, rival analytical approaches in the field of political science. Some of the puzzles addressed in the volume are (1) Why did or did not countries report self-defense to the United Nations Security Council? (2) Why are trade disputes involving Asian countries resolved more often via negotiations than by quasi-legal panels? (3) Why do free trade agreements concluded between Asian countries have relatively modest liberalization contents? (4) Why do regional institutions in Asia have greater global links than those in Europe? The volume begins with an introductory chapter, coauthored by the two editors, who discuss the affinity of international relations theory and game theory with special attention to Japan and Asia. The following nine substantive chapters are developed based on the conceptual framework and, for integrity and coherence, are sub-grouped into four parts that correspond to major issues in international relations scholarship. These parts include (1) international public goods and collective action, (2) the politics of compliance, (3) democracy and international agreement, and (4) diplomacy and information. The volume ends with its major findings and suggestions for future research.
