Anotace knihy

Excerpt from Elements of Algebra: Preliminary to the Differential Calculus and Fit for Higher Classes of Schools in Which the Principles of Arithmetic Are Taught In the title-page I have endeavoured to make it clear that it will be impossible to teach algebra on the usual plan by means of this work. It is intended only for such students as have that sort of knowledge of the principles of arithmetic which comes by demonstration, and whose reasoning faculties have therefore already undergone some training. Algebra, as an art, can be of no use to any one in the business of life; certainly not as taught in schools. I appeal to every man who has been through the school routine whether this be not the case. Taught as an art it is of little use in the higher mathematics, as those are made to feel who attempt to study the differential calculus without knowing more of its principles than is contained in books of rules. The science of algebra, independently of any of its uses, has all the advantages which belong to mathematics in general as an object of study, and which it is not necessary to enumerate. Viewed either as a science of quantity, or as a language of symbols, it may be made of the greatest service to those who are sufficiently acquainted with arithmetic, and have sufficient power of comprehension, to enter fairly upon its difficulties.
