Excerpt from Die Drei Gerechten Kammacher After remaining two years at Heidelberg, Keller went to Berlin. He intended to remain a year studying the drama; instead he remained five years, devoting much of his time to authorship. These were his most fruitful years as a writer. In 1846, a volume of poems had appeared, but attracted little attention; a second volume published in 1851 contained some of the best lyric poems of the time and gave Keller his first real prominence in literature. In Berlin, too, he wrote his first prose work, the autobiographical romance, Der grime Heinrich. This work is characterized by a romantic indefi niteness of form and content, and by a wealth of poetic beauty. Yet it is a true portrayal of the character of the I author, who says that sogar dos Anekdotische darin so gut wie wahr ist. With its striking originality, its delicate auto biographical portraiture, and beautiful episodes, the book is one of the most important German novels of the nineteenth century. The work is similar to Goethe's Wilhelm M eister, but Keller was no mere imitator. In 1879 - 80 it was revised, owing to the criticism of the hero's tragic death in the first version.
