Combining incisive theoretical and empirical analyses of development policy, this study argues that neopatrimonialism is too narrow a lens for understanding the host of problems with development in Nigeria. In particular, Eurocentric diffusionism has been a critical element in the history of Nigerian development. As author Jeremiah I. Dibua demonstrates, diffusionism and its associated external factors have fostered neocolonial dependence and the peripheralization of the national economy. Taken together, these strands combine to form a compelling case for endogenous formulation of development policy and, ultimately, for the reformulation of the Nigerian state.
