The Dipylon was the largest and most impressive gate of the ancient fortification of the city of Athens. The investigation is based on an exhaustive analysis of the architectural remains of the gate. It also refers to indications from the building activities in the surrounding area (a marble fountainhouse, moats, canal systems, stratigraphy, spoliae) and from literary sources. The investigation results in a detailed reconstruction of the different phases of the gate and their alterations. The extensive descriptions and discussions in the text are visualised by a great number of plans and demonstrative drawings.
