To modern readers, Péguy’s struggles seem quite contradictory, just as they often did to his contemporaries. This pro-Dreyfus and anarchistic socialist became a virulent patriot, and later a singular Christian proponent of “profundities,” who internally combined universes which seem to be highly incompatible. Rather than compare these diverse beliefs, or recklessly conclude that reconciling them is an easy task, it is much more fruitful to point out that it is the same single contradiction – individualism vs. socialism – that can be found throughout his work: solitude vs. social commitment, “mystical” withdrawal vs. “political” engagement – terms which he handles in a unique and often interchangeable way, and which imbue this unclassifiable work with all of its wit and timeliness.
