Comparative Federalism provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of federalism. The authors draw from their diverse research on federal systems to argue the importance of federalism for democratic governance and conflict management in a globalizing world. The book starts with a discussion of the meaning of federal principles and institutional compromise and then introduces four main model federal systems: America, Canada, Germany, and the European Union. But the authors don't stop there - they also offer an exploration of federal systems that vary from the four main models, and explore differing European and North American traditions in the history of federal thought. All research has been updated and revised for the second edition, and two new chapters have been added on fiscal federalism and the limits of federalism.
