Anotace knihy

Alya Rahman comes to Dili to do a job.

The Malaysian programme manager has worked in enough countries to understand the rhythm of international assignments: arrive, learn the place, do the work, pack, leave.

Then Farid Rahimi arrives.

An Afghan humanitarian worker assigned to a different project, Farid is temporarily placed in the same meeting room while the organisation prepares their offices. Between laptops, programme deadlines, shared tea, mandarins, and long working days, an easy friendship begins.

It should remain exactly that.

Farid is married, with a wife and young son waiting elsewhere. Alya has spent two years in a long-distance relationship with Haziq, her Malaysian boyfriend working in Finland.

Their lives already belong to other people and other places.

But temporary rooms have a way of creating their own routines.

A friendship becomes familiarity. Familiarity becomes the person who notices when something is wrong. And when Alya's relationship begins quietly falling apart across thousands of kilometres, Farid is simply there.

Until being there starts to mean too much.

Neither Alya nor Farid is looking for another life. Neither wants to hurt the people they love. There is no villain to blame and no simple choice that makes everything right.

There are only two people who met at the wrong time, in a place neither was meant to stay.

Set against the international humanitarian world of Dili, Timor-Leste, Borrowed Time is a tender, quietly funny and bittersweet novel about friendship, forbidden love, loyalty, distance, and the strange intimacy of temporary lives.

It is about tea and field trips, airport departures and ordinary working days. About the people who become home in places that were never supposed to be home.

And about discovering that some relationships are not measured by whether they last.

Only by whether they were real.
