Ibi Abi 'Aun came from a family of secretaries, poets and men of letters resident in Iraq and involved in the service of the Abbasid Caliphate at Baghdad in the 9th and 10th centuries. He himself was hanged for heresy in AD 934. His Book of Similes, however, is not a controversial work: it is a compilation of similes used by Arabic poets, arranged partly by topic and partly by author. It is the only work of the kind from its period and with its interest in originality and creative imagination, contributed something new to the development of Arab literary criticism.
