Anotace knihy

This book, the first of two volumes, presents a major survey, systematization, and comparison of historic Native North American ideas about the journey of souls of the deceased to an afterlife. It explores ritual drama as part of the bases of Hopewell peoples' achievements in their motivations, specifically their philosophical-religious understandings of the world and their notions of selfhood: their cosmology, eschatology, ontology, and ethics of interpersonal relationships. The volume breathes life back into Scioto Hopewell ceremonial centers and ritual paraphernalia by documenting in great detail some of the ceremonies that Hopewell peoples performed there, the native meanings involved in those rites, and the philosophical-religious motivations for their enactments. The ceremonies on which the book focuses were large-scale "ritual dramas" performed within charnel houses. The drama's plots narrated the journey to an afterlife taken by soul-like essences of newly deceased persons, the landscapes traveled, and the helpful and challenging persons and creatures met along the way. Layouts of human remains and unique artifacts were used as theatrical props by religious practitioners to help audiences visualize the stories and provide archaeological insight into the content of the narratives. Caring for and healing souls of the deceased, safely guiding them to an afterlife, ensuring the safety of the living, emphasizing the family and familial ethics at wider social scales, and creating cooperative social alliances among communities through jointly held ceremonies were among the motives of Scioto Hopewell peoples for performing their ritual dramas and for building their huge earthen theaters.
