Averroes (1126, Cordoba – 1198, Marrakech), whose full name was Abū l-Walīd Muhammad ibn Ahmad Ibn Rušd, was an individual of larger-than-life dimensions: medical expert, jurist, Qadi, philosopher and commentator on Aristotle’s works. He furthered the tradition of Greek philosophy in the Islamic world and later, by translating, distributing and using the latter’s works, became one of the key sources of Jewish and Latin medieval cultures. Yet this master affronted scholarly circles as well. For centuries in Europe, Averroes was regarded as the incoherent founder of a degrading and anti-religious theory on humankind. This aspect is discussed in the beginning of the book.
