Steam and diesel locomotives are both driven by heat engines. This name is give by a class of engine which converts heat energy into mechanical energy. In the steam engine heat energy is release4d by burning coal, and the conversion takes place by raising steam to move the pistons. In the diesel the hot gasses produced by burning oil fuel act on the pistons directly, and the burning or combustopn takes place in thr cylinders. This process enables the diesel to be classified as an internal-combustion engine.
