In our globalized world, English is increasingly the language of learning and of business. More and more international students look to English-speaking countries for their university education to prepare themselves for this changed world. To get on a degree course, they need English. These language learners are different in their motivation from those learning English as a foreign language, and from those learning English in a bilingual setting. This book presents a study that focuses on learners of English for academic purposes in Australia. It suggests a motivational model informed by theorizing in language learning and education. The proposed model of adaptive language learning identifies the motivational characteristics of those who succeed in learning to speak English. It looks at self-efficacy, anxiety, motivation and learning strategies in relation to speaking. Issues emerged in the study relating to learners from Confucian Heritage Cultures (for example, Japan, China and Korea). This book will be of particular interest to researchers and scholars in the area of second language motivation.
