This book, as the first volume of A General History of Chinese Accounting, contains the period from Prehistory to the Warring States Era. It starts with Introduction as the overarching framework for all involved volumes. Chapter 1 delves into the historical origins of Chinese accounting, while Chapter 2 introduces accounting in ancient China. The examination of the origin of accounting science in Chapter 1 concludes that during the late Old Stone era in China, approximately 50,000 to 15,000 years ago, humanity had largely completed the transition from being "subjects of nature" to "subjects of production," marked by the emergence of methods and rules for measurement recording, signifying the origin of prehistoric accounting practices. By the Neolithic era, there was an evolution from primitive measurement recording to the development of "Shuqi" combining numerals and writing. In the ancient period of Chinese accounting development, it went through the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, leading into the medieval period of China during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods.
