This book will explore the extent to which representations of women leaders are gendered and in many cases, sexualised, in three British newspapers that cross the political spectrum and with different readerships: The Daily Mail, The Sunday Times and The Guardian . Arguably, the third newspaper adopts a pro-feminist stance and can be rarely accused of demonising women. However, despite this, this paper has a tendency to revert to a modernist, essentialist view of representing women that does not always help women leaders' cause. The book will show that prominent women are represented in a wide variety of ways, not all of them negative, but assumptions are often made about a limiting, universal female nature. Baxter argues that challenging binary gender categories is one of the most significant requirements of deconstructive, feminist readings. In doing so, she introduces an updated poststructuralist approach to discourse analysis that enables readers to challenge the gendered representations of women leaders in the news. Using Feminist Poststructuralist Discourse Analysis (FPDA) as a basis, the book proposes a set of strategies that enables scholars to read gendered texts 'against the grain'. Such readings can rupture the text to produce multi-faceted, more empowering constructions of women's plural identities.
