Excerpt from Village Sermons, or Fifty-Two Plain and Short Discourses on the Principal Doctrines of the Gospel: Intended for the Use of Families, Sunday-Schools, or Companies Assembled for Religious Instruction in Country Villages George burder was born in London, of pious parents, June After his mother's death, when he was nine years Old, he was for a time drawn aside by sinful companions; but he continued to attend public worship, and at twenty-three united with the church at the Tabernacle, founded by Whitefield, which was then blessed with the ministry of the eminent Rev. William Romaine. He soon entered on the study of the ology; preached in the villages in the vicinity of some of his father's estates and in various pulpits in London and October 29, 1778, at the age of twenty-six, was ordained pastor at Lancaster, where he labored with great fidelity, extending his services to destitute villages around him, often in the midst of opposition and persecution, till at the end of one year, he had travelled on horseback about twenty-five hundred miles, and preached two hundred and fifty-four times, besides a variety of exhortations at prayer-meetings and church meetings.
