Excerpt from The Works of President Edwards, Vol. 3 of 10: Containing, I. Dissertation on the End for Which God Created the World; II. Dissertation on the Nature of True Virtue; III. History of the Work of Redemption A subordinate end is what an agent aims at, not at all upon its own account, but Wholly on the account of a further end, of which it is considered as a means.
