Anotace knihy

Excerpt from The Story of Tecumseh League. Then he first began to assume importance in the eyes of his enemies and to occupy a place in the his tory of the Border Wars. After the disaster at Tippe canoe, Tecumseh tried in vain to rally his followers in support of their common cause. It was then that in despair he offered his services to the British King. Tecumseh appeared in Canada on the eve of the War of 1812. Events succeeded each other so rapidly in that desperate struggle that historians of the period make but brief mention of the heroic chief who was to them but one of many players in the great drama then being enacted. From what has been said, it will be apparent to the reader how difficult is the task of the writer who would tell the story of Tecumseh. Drake's Tecumseh is the standard, and practically the only, work on the subject, but the later chapters are really a history of the War of 1812, not a biography of the chief. The writer is aware that the same criticism may be made of his own work. He can only say that during the past three years he has sought material from every available source. Scores of books and official documents have been consulted. He has visited the scenes of Tecumseh's life, conversed with the descendants of the early settlers, and heard from the lips of the red men the traditions concerning Tecumseh handed down in their tribes. In the following pages he has tried to depict for young Canadians the noble and pathetic figure of this hero of a lost cause.
