Focusing mainly on the activity and attitudes of the secular aristocracy between the Carolingian era and the late 12th century, this book collects studies pertaining to the "Peace of God" movement, international relations between England and France, the waning in power of the latter Carolingians, the growth in power of the aristocracy, medieval knighthood, clerical influence, and other studies concerned above all with the nature and exercise of power. The studies were largely born out of a fascination with Aquitaine, from its conquest by Carolingians to its subsequent existence under princely government.
