Sophia Sawyer was born and educated in New Hampshireand Massachusetts. She turned to teaching as ameans of support after the death of her parents, andwas later sent to teach in Tennessee for theAmerican Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions.Sawyer exemplifies the first generation of women toreceive an academy education and become teachersthemselves. In the large number of letters writtento, by, and about her, it is revealed that Sawyerwas a religious and pious person who felt a callingto Christianize and educate the Cherokees. She alsodisplayed considerable respect for their culture, something which is often overlooked in manyhistories of White/Native American encounters.Sawyer appears to have cared deeply about herstudents, and the techniques that she used reflectthis depth of feeling. Sawyer created a classroomatmosphere which encouraged but challenged thestudents to learn English, as well as subjectstaught in schools for Anglo-American children. Heraccomplishment is worth examining in light of ourmodern concern about multi-cultural education.
